How do Confluence permissions work?

Good question! Permissions in Confluence are a bit confusing and will hopefully be simplified in later releases. This page will catalog all findings related to Confluence permissions that aren't very well documented.

Space Permissions and Page Restrictions

Confluence has the notion of Space Permissions and Page Restrictions. A space permission is set in the 'Space Admin' section and sets permissions for all pages in a space. Page restrictions set restrictions on a specific page.

  • A page restriction does not override a space permission. This is tricky and not very well documented. For example:

The Confluence page 'CADI Menu' has the following page restrictions set:

View
Delhi Faculty and Staff

Edit
Delhi Faculty and Staff
Betty White

While the space that the page resides in has the following space permissions set:

View
Delhi Faculty and Staff

Edit
Delhi Faculty and Staff

Betty White is not i the Delhi Faculty and Staff group.

Question: Will Betty White be able to edit the page 'CADI Menu'?

Answer: Nope! This is because a space permission always overrides a page restriction, even if the page restrictions dialog box doesn't say so. Always consider space permission when checking page restrictions.
